The classic haircut is back in fashion once again. We look at why the Bob is such an enduring hairstyle. 

Led by Hollywood celebrities, the Bob haircut has seen a huge trend resurgence and looks to be the cut of 2020. Straight or waved, ‘Lob’ length or short, the hairstyle of the moment was seen at last month’s 2020 Golden Globes on a huge number of stars including Naomi Watts, Greta Gerwig, Zoey Deutch, Reese Witherspoon, Michelle Williams and Lucy Boynton.  

But why does the Bob cut regularly come back into fashion? We asked members of the TIGI Creative Team for their thoughts on this enduring hairstyle.

WHY DOES THE BOB REGUARLY COME BACK INTO FASHION?

“The Bob is timeless!” says Maria Kovacs, TIGI European Session Director. “It’s youthful, chic, and lends itself to many textures. It’s really adaptable too. Anyone can look good wearing the Bob.  One of its enduring aspects is that it instantly gives the wearer a new image, without compromise or the fear of losing too much length.

In the wild-packed 1920s it was a cut denoting freedom, in the 60s and 70s it was about youthfulness, and once again freedom. And today it’s about re-invention.”

WHAT’S THE BEST BOB TECHNIQUE? 

When it comes to the actual technique of cutting a bob hairstyle, the team agree it isn’t just ‘one cut’.   

Its versatility comes from the fact that the Bob has many variations” says Maria. “This includes the Graduated Bob, Layered Bob, with a fringe, one length, and A- Line. 

“And its simple structure and the silhouette it creates is something I have always loved” adds Akos Bodi. 

Philip Downing, TIGI UK Education & Creative Director, applauds its power to adapt to the wearer. “Because it’s cemented in place as a true classic haircut, conservative clients can rock the cut in a professional and striking manner, but also, with the latest colour trends, it can be a cut that shows youthfulness and strength.”  

Courtney Mason at Salon FMK, adds: “Due to its simplicity you can adjust the length and shape to suit any face. It can look cute and adorable on a child, powerful on a businesswoman, but also sexy and flirty on a pop star. For me, it’s the haircut of haircuts! Because of its versatility it can be worn sleek, asymmetric, with volume, or sweeping. It’s no surprise it’s endured and stayed relevant for more than a century and will never be out of fashion.

In an anti-modern age, the Bob has prevailed.

WHO CAN WEAR A BOB HAIRSTYLE? 

We asked the team: can anyone wear a Bob? Who does it suit? And how can it be adapted to different clients? 

“Every decade brings a slight variation and there’s always a famous person making a statement by wearing the cut. Harper Beckham’s cute little French Bob is a perfect example.” says Piero. “What makes it versatile? When it’s cut well, it’s low maintenance and it suits anyone from 10 to 100! Just look at Anna Wintour who turned 70 recently!”  

“And what about Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra?” adds Maria. “It’s an historical reference, and it’s Elizabeth Taylor! She’s an epic beauty and one of the most famous queens in history, and both live forever.” 

“I’ve always loved a classic Bob. It’s strong, feminine and strikingly beautiful.” explains Courtney. “The length and shape can be altered slightly so that it’s always relevant and in fashion, and no matter how our industry evolves, we always need the classics. The cool thing about the Bob is that it’s quite a technically advanced haircut but looks so simple and clean.” 

Philip adds “The Bob is the ultimate versatile cut, particularly as it can be worn in a classic manner or more playfully with a fringe and movement.” 

“The Bob complements and sits well with every decade’s fashion trends as it’s the ultimate classic haircut” says Akos. It has an understated elegance and can be worn in several different ways, with many different fringes, so it’s adaptable to different textures. For me it’s the perfect combo of old and new, classic and modern. And of course, having been worn by style icons from Louise Brooks to Anna Wintour, its beauty and versatility constantly remind new generations of its power.
