Mark Fast and Maria Kovacs take inspiration from the Swinging Sixties of London, but add a very modern twist.

On the last day of London Fashion Week Mark Fast’s AW20 show dipped into the latter days of the glorious Swinging Sixties with a nod to the French singer-songwriter and style-icon, Francoise Hardy.

With micro mini-skirts and his signature party wear, this time around he was inspired by 60s’ designer Mary Quant. The collection included beautifully crafted backless gowns in Fast’s signature crochet, floor length fringed skirts and shaggy coats. Wanting to also show individuality and diversity, Fast also included Street-inspired clothes for male and female fans. It was a collection of fun and youthful exuberance, with rich colours and high visual appeal.

Working with Mark Fast and leading the TIGI Session Team was Maria Kovacs, TIGI European Session Director. Having worked with Mark for over eight seasons, Maria told Fuse how she is always excited when she hears the inspiration Mark takes for his collections.

“I always love to hear Mark’s inspiration for the look” she said. “It really helps us create the perfect collaboration. This time around I really loved the reference to the late Swinging Sixties and Francoise Hardy. It’s a powerful style. He wanted the girls and guys to have a youthful, luxe look with polished but not overly ‘done’ hair. To achieve this look we focused on creating volume and movement in a perfect, yet imperfect way, in order to create a fresh, cool twist.”

This is what Maria did to achieve the key looks:

Step 1. Section by section, apply Bed Head Superstar Queen for a Day to dry hair from the roots to the ends, then blow-dry the hair backwards, away from the face.

Step 2. Beginning at the front hairline, and using large, big barrel tongs, set the hair in large sections, working away from the face at the front hairline and horizontally through the back. Spray each section with TIGI Copyright Maximum Hold Hairspray for style support.

Step 3. Once the hair has cooled, brush away from the face using a Mason Pearson bristle brush.

Step 4. Starting from the bottom, backcomb each section at the roots only, working up towards the hairline. Spray hair with TIGI Copyright Volume Lift Styling Spray and brush into the desired shape.

Step 5. When the desired shape is achieved, secure with a headband to complete the style and spritz with TIGI Bed Head Full of It Volume Finishing Spray.
