WHAT’S TRENDING? SPLIT HAIR COLOUR AND PLAYFUL PLACEMENT

Hair colour trend alert! Colour blocking is back and making a statement!

The colour blocking hair trend might split opinion (excuse the pun), but definitely shouldn’t be ignored! Later this year, Disney is bringing Emma Stone to our screens as Cruella De Vil in a prequel to the classic 101 Dalmatians and it looks as though the hairdressing world is taking inspiration from our favourite villain. While Emma Stone starts her Cruella journey with her trademark red locks, she soon transitions into the black and white, half and half colour look that we all know and love.

So, will this be the latest colour trend your clients will be requesting? You have been tagging us in your colour placement results on TIGI Professional Instagram and, we thought we should investigate. We spoke with TIGI European Technical Director, Kerrie O’Reilly, to find out more about colour blocking and the split hair technique.

How do you create the split hair colour effect?

“When it comes down to creativity, split hair colour does not have to include a middle parting,” explains Kerrie. “There are other ways to divide the head, like horizontal bands of colour or a colour block placement, reminiscent of the early 00s.

You can express yourself in your own way with just a simple placement piece. Whether it is concealed as a hidden panel, or in full sight as a bold face-framing look, it can evoke how you want to express your personality without the commitment of a full head or global application!”

“Be vigilant with sectioning patterns: clean sections equal a clean result. For colour blocks, angular sectioning will give a more pronounced block and be bold! If working with pre-lightener, take fine sections and apply product generously. If working on pre-lightened hair, be sure to saturate the product to get a vibrant result.”

“My top tip when it comes to rinsing the contrasting colours would be to apply a small amount of conditioner to the hair around the piece to act as a gentle barrier. TIGI Copyright Moisture Conditioner is perfect for this. If needed, you can place a TIGI Meche Strip under a colour panel whilst rinsing the immediate access colour, to avoid any intermixing during rinsing.”

I love this trend as it really gives a powerful sense of identity!

What shades work best for half and half hair colour?

“Consultation is key here!” says Kerrie. “Blocking can be as bold and clashing or as subtly different as your client desires. Braver clients could opt for a high contrast look, using an icy blonde and black combination to rock the Cruella De Vil extremes.

For a softer effect, different depths of the same pastel colours can work well next to each other. Use the same formula on each section but just tweak your quantities. Pastel tones are the easiest shades to wear for most people; think a pale lavender with peppermint, or baby blue and dusty pink. Anything goes! “

How do you maintain colour blocking and split hair colour at home?

“As with any colour service, proper aftercare is always essential” says Kerrie.  “I would recommend TIGI Copyright Toning shampoo to keep lighter shades clean and banish any brassiness. If they have darker shades or have the full contrast, half and half look, Bed Head Colour Goddess can help enhance those hues.”

Nordics TIGI Copyright Colour enthusiast, Miriam LaBreche, has been experimenting with the half and half look on her own hair for several years. We asked how she cleanses her half blue black and half platinum blonde hair. “I rinse the colour separately after application, however on my regular washes I do not need to divide the hair. The black doesn’t bleed, but will help to keep the coolness in the blonde. I use TIGI Copyright SOS Extreme Recovery regularly to keep my hair in good condition.”
