The Netflix documentary series starring Zac Efron and Darin Olien looking at healthier, eco-alternatives to producing food, water and energy has been a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

If you haven’t got hooked on the series yet, and here at TIGI Fuse we most certainly are, then you won’t have spotted two of our own stars in one of the episodes. In fact, you need to start watching right now!

TIGI US Creative Team members, Joel Torres and Philip Downing, were called upon to cut and style Zac’s hair during the filming of ‘Down to Earth’ with his co-star Darin. The stars were about to travel to Puerto Rico, which is, of course, Joel’s home, so there was lots of chat about food and surfing, as well as the aftermath of the terrible hurricane that devastated the beautiful island a few years ago.

“There was great chemistry between the guys,” said Philip. “Zac is a lovely, lovely guy and really into ‘deep’ stuff. I trimmed Darin’s hair and used Salt Spray to finish. It was so funny; he couldn’t get his head around the idea that I was creating a surf look with actual products. Then Zac chipped in with: “What do you think we’re filming: Point Break?”

Talking of products, Joel used the Bed Head Wax Stick on Zac. “He got very excited,” said Joel. “It turned out he used to use the Stick all the time as a teenager and had been a real fan. He said the smell really brought back memories.”

A few months after the filming ended, Joel was in a NY Uber on his way to the airport to fly back to Dallas when he got a call saying Zac was going to be in town for the launch of ‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile’, the 2019 film in which Zac starred as serial killer, Ted Bundy, and could Joel cut his hair. Joel got the Uber to turn round and headed back to New York.

“He’s an amazing guy,” said Joel. “He really understands hair. Honestly, he could draw a diagram of how he wanted it cut, but in a very cool way! And of course, I used the Stick again. After I’d finished we hung out for a while and then he asked me to go to the gym with him. I have to say, even though he was injured, he beat my ass!

“He’s a regular guy into health, and he’s really normal and friendly. He’s into healthy stuff; he surfs and runs and eats well – Down to Earth is what he is. After that day, he started following me on Instagram, and one year on, he still is!”
