LATEST FROM THE TIGI ACADEMY NEW YORK - TIGI FUSE

TIGI has always had very close links with Japan. It’s a country Anthony Mascolo has visited many times and over the years he has forged close personal relationships with many hairdressers in this fascinating country.

So, it was an absolute pleasure this week to accommodate 57 students from the Sumida Hairdressing School in Japan, for a special course at the TIGI Academy in New York. The students were a graduating class of 18 to 20-year olds, and this was a final preparation before they commence their hairdressing careers. Most of them had never previously visited New York and for all of them, it was their first visit to the Academy.

Thomas Osborn led a great team for the day, including Gen Itoh, TIGI’s Creative Director for Asia, now based in Tokyo, and the US team, including Philip Downing, Joel TorresRichy Kandasamy and Renee Valerie. The course encompassed the importance of foundation education for a hairdresser’s future career and highlighted the new Modern Classics collection. Presenting five finished looks, the team gave the students an insight into inspiration and influence, as well as technical breakdowns of cut and colour techniques and key products used to create the textures and finishes.

Throughout the live demonstrations the team highlighted the Classics to Creative philosophy and gave information on Copyright Care prior to its Japanese launch. A highlight of the seminar was a make-up demonstration by Asami Matsuda, a Japanese editorial make-up artist in NYC, who also did a Q&A with the group about her career journey and how she became a Japanese editorial make-up artist working in New York. More inspiration came from Joel Torres who shared ideas on achieving the best results from social media, focusing on Instagram.

“It was a seminar packed with information and the group were very receptive,” said Thomas. “They were engaged, excited and were all looking forward to starting their careers. This is the next generation of Japanese hairdressers who have been exposed to TIGI Education very early on and I have no doubt it will leave a lasting impression on them throughout their careers. It was a fantastic day for us all.”
