LIVERPOOL LOSES ONE OF ITS GREATS - TIGI FUSE

It is with great sadness we learnt yesterday of the passing of legendary Liverpool hairdresser Peter Collinge OBE. Father of award-winning hairdresser, Andrew Collinge, Peter was a grandfather and great-grandfather, much loved by his family, and adored by every member of the Andrew Collinge team.

In 1945, after completing his hairdressing apprenticeship, Peter joined the crew of the Mauritania and in the ensuing four years spent his time at sea, where he perfected his hairdressing skills on the ship’s female crew. Later, when the ship became a commercial liner, he used his skills to style the hair of high society travellers.

When he returned to Liverpool, Peter began entering and winning hairdressing competitions and in 1952 opened his first salon using some of his prize money. The previous year Peter had married his model, Hazel, a primary school teacher. Hazel immediately began working with her husband and soon became an integral part of the business and famed for her exquisite style.

During the 60s and 70s Peter opened further salons, and was known as the most fashionable hairdresser in Liverpool. Peter always valued and remembered his own excellent training as an apprentice and one of his goals was to give opportunity to young people entering the profession. Supported by Hazel, in 1974 Peter began his own training school and established a reputation for educational excellence for which the company is renowned to this day.

Peter’s dedication to education and the hairdressing profession was recognised in 2012 when he was awarded the OBE. He officially retired in 1992, after gradually handing over the business to Andrew, and in the early 1990s the company was rebranded to ‘Andrew Collinge’, with Peter remaining as Chairman and Andrew’s sister, Sarah, heading up the education division. But Peter continued visiting the salons and only last year went to see the new Andrew Collinge salon in Selfridges in the Trafford Centre, Manchester. He had a wonderful, friendly nature and a twinkle in his eye, and for all the staff it was a real treat when Peter popped in to see them.

Peter Collinge will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
