With Halloween upon us, we’ve taken serious style inspiration from one of our favourite binge-worthy shows: Stranger Things. Fuse spoke with the show’s lead hairstylist, Sarah Hindsgaul, to find out how she achieved the iconic 80s’ styles. With the right products and some styling know-how, you can recreate the gang’s retro looks for your clients (or yourself!)

The newest member of the gang, Robin has an effortlessly cool style. Not only cool in 1985, her short wavy bob has been one of the biggest hair trends this year, seen across social media, backstage, and in salons globally.

Sarah explains how to create the look: “To achieve a perfect bob like Robin’s, use a deep waving iron. This will give hair a soft, natural movement.”

Arguably the most iconic hairstyle in the series, Steve Harrington reveals the secret to his locks is product. While it might not be “four puffs of Farah Fawcett Spray”, Hindsgaul shares her own style secrets to creating Steve’s infamous quiff. “First, we prepare his hair with mousse for added volume and thickness, and apply a hard wax for extra hold. To finish, his hair is diffused into place.”

For season 3, she added sun-kissed highlights to add further definition to his hair.

Eleven has shown a range of hairstyles throughout the series, with each look reflecting her character’s progression. From that first buzzcut, to the blonde wig, and on to the slicked back “badass” wet look, her latest style is relaxed and natural.

Hindsgaul explains: “Eleven’s curls are created by applying a light mousse and diffusing with her head in the ‘upside down’! To fit in with the summer season, she also had some soft natural highlights to add more movement.”

Joyce’s look is timeless. Her feminine style of loose waves and fringe is just as popular today, as it was in the Eighties.

To achieve Joyce’s undone curls and natural movement, Sarah explains she uses two different sizes of curling wands (1.5 and 2 inches).
