“You learn through challenges,” says Thomas Osborn, US Creative Director & VP of Education. Pushing an intimate class of hairdressers to challenge themselves creatively and technically was the aim of this week’s Total Concept course at the TIGI Academy in New York.
The three-day course included creative cut and colouring but, importantly, the presentations linked to clothes styling and makeup to emphasise the total concept aspect. It also touched on brand identity and personality, and this led to the theme of the course: Hair + Music.
“Music has always been an important source of influence and inspiration for our work, and links so closely with the original Bed Head vibe” says Thomas. “Focusing on the relationship between hair and music was the perfect starting point for the inspirational work we did with the students, particularly as we have been working on a new presentation for the BTC show, so the course gave students a sneak-peek at what we’ve been working on and allowed them to think outside the box about their own hair styling. The highlight of the Total Concept course was an interactive photo shoot with TIGI photographer, Alex Barron-Hough. Both students and hairdressers worked on looks spanning different music genres over the past decades, from model Annika in full-on Studio 54 disco queen drama to Carl expressing David Bowie-esque ‘gender neutral’ Glam Rock. Model, Ell, was the super cool 80s’ Debbie Harry clone and Hayden, with her short undercut, expressed the ultimate graphic vibes of the 2010s. Both the TIGI Creative Team and students created the looks for the photo shoot, which perfectly captured the moods through the ages.

Overheard as one student left: “This was the first time I’d done a photo shoot. I was amazed how different the hair looked on the screen to what I saw when I was looking at the model. It was really hard, but I definitely want to do more!”
